The folks at ‘Wizards of the Coast’ have finally shown some love to the community of iPad users by rolling out an official version of Magic 2013 which also happens to be a new instalment of the super hit franchise ‘Magic: The Gathering’. What is also noteworthy is that this was a multi platform release by Wizards of the Coast targeting gamers on Steam, Xbox 360, PSN and iOS. As the game description states, gamers will get to face a challenge far greater than on the previous version with Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013.

Magic 2013 Game Review

The objective behind this game like in its previous instalments is to get the better of your enemy’s creatures using your own while attacking the opponent. Planeswalkers are wizards who possess the powers to travel between ‘planes’ and battle each other. The game includes 3 decks of cards with 5 unlockable cards in each deck, 4 deadly opponents which includes the Planeswalker Garruk Wildspeaker and also a new feature called ‘Encounters’ that lets you test your skills against preset AI strategies. Heavily inspired by its ‘Xbox Live Arcade’ Duels of Plainswalkers cousins, this latest release is supposedly programmed to work in such a way that it takes away the complete control of their decks from the users. The cards are split into decks for you, which only leaves you with the option of customizing your decks but within the limits of the available options.

What is also nice about this new version is how it takes the entire storyline, which was hardly present in the first part, merely introduced in the second one but gets a whole new overhaul in this one. Newbies be warned! What seems like a dull and boring card game that is as complicated as hell on the outside is actually an extremely fun and addictive game on the inside. The game has a ‘tutorial mode’ that covers everything from its elementary to its abstruse features. Most aspects of what the storyline is, what you’re meant to do and how to play can also be picked up just by paying attention to the messages and prompts that appear on the screen as you progress through stages. The game is feature-rich and is loaded in terms of content. It offers you options to play the fully blown single player campaign or the newly added Planechase mode.

The stunning artwork depicted in the game is far beyond what words can describe and the amount of efforts gone into making the artwork look ravishing are all but evident with impeccably great attention to detail. There is also a new feature that tracks gameplay statistics, which means stats like deck speed, the creature size, card synergy and deck flexibility are now tracked and displayed in terms or star ratings. The game which is free to download and play also includes a host of in-app purchases like unlockable decks, cards, additional campaign levels, challenges and a multiplayer mode. Magic 2013 is available for downloads on the app store. Although I highly recommend this to anyone who is open to new addictions, this time I will let the numbers do the talking. Over 5000 positive app store ratings in just 5 days – decide for yourself :)
